War destruction
In just one night, between 25th to 26th of August, 1992., aggressor sent a fire grenades and made a huge fire to the City Hall. On that occasion, the building was destroyed, and about two million books, articles and magazines disappeared irretrievably.
The City Hall is the largest and most representative building in the Austro-Hungarian period in Sarajevo. Just one night 25/26. August 1992 from aggressor grenades 80% of the total library fund was destroyed and this beautiful and valuable cultural monument was destroyed. About two million books, articles, and magazines have been irretrievably destroyed. The fire caused by direct artillery grenades during the night between August 25 and 26, 1992 caused the following damage to the construction of the facility:
- all wooden structures have been destroyed,
- the steel dome above the central space of the aula is severely damaged and deformed, armored glass as a cover is destroyed,
- the walls of the ground floor, as well as the other floors are damaged to a considerable extent, while the walls of the attic are completely destroyed,
- the hall as the most representative part of the building is severely damaged, and some pillars are completely destroyed, as well as a certain number of open arches and stone arches,
- stone staircases and decorative fences were destroyed,
- the finishing decorative façade is partially damaged, while one part is completely destroyed.
