MONUMENTAL STAIRCASE

The Atrium is the focal point of the City Hall which connects spaces on all floors inside of the building. The first floor gallery is connected to the Atrium with a monumental staircase made from massive stone blocks of white marble with richly decorated fences and corner pillars.

Walls of the main staircase are horizontally divided into two parts separated by a profiled stone timing. The lower part of the wall surface which follows the staircase and ends on the first floor is decorated with hand-painted imitation of ceramic tiles.

The central wall above the staircase is decorated with a spectacular stained-glass window framed by the two semicircular pillars with richly decorated capitals.

By carefully observing the wall decoration to the right of the window, you can notice the original fragment, the so-called blind arcade or a decorative arch in the middle of a wall, saved and preserved in its original condition. This was done by the architects who led the reconstruction of the building as evidence of authentic restoration.

Walls and ceiling surfaces in the entire building were carefully hand-painted by artists from Bosnia and Herzegovina. This monumental task two years to complete.

The inspiration for the intricate and fascinating decorations and patterns of the monumental staircase as well as the entire interior of the City Hall originate from the westernmost parts of the Islamic world from northern Africa-Maghreb to the southern parts of the Iberian Peninsula, from Cairo to Granada and Alhambra.
